There is something interesting about the way a song can capture the feeling of wanting something to change without necessarily knowing exactly what that change is supposed to look like.
Sometimes it is wanting someone to come into your life and disrupt the routine you've gotten used to. Sometimes it is wanting to feel desired. Sometimes it is realizing that you've developed feelings for someone and suddenly finding yourself unable to ignore them. And sometimes it is simply the feeling of being completely taken by another person.
These songs all approach that feeling differently, but there is a common thread running through them: something has changed, or you desperately want it to.
Ruin My Life — Zara Larsson
What I really like about Ruin My Life is the overall sound and the feeling it creates. It isn't necessarily the specific line "I want you to ruin my life" that stands out to me, but more what that idea symbolizes.
I interpret it as wanting someone to come into your life and disrupt the monotony of everyday life. Not necessarily in a destructive way, but by giving you something to feel excited about again.
I think of it like throwing a rock into a completely still lake. Before the rock hits, everything is calm and stagnant. Then it hits the water, and suddenly the ripples begin spreading outward, changing everything around them.
That is how I imagine this kind of relationship. Someone comes into your life and suddenly your routines feel different. Your thoughts are occupied by them. There is this new energy that wasn't there before.
The song also has a really hopeful feeling to me. It reminds me of those early stages of liking someone when everything feels exciting and full of possibility. You don't know where it is going yet, but that uncertainty almost makes it better.
There is just this feeling that something has changed.
For the first time in a while, life doesn't feel quite as stagnant.
And I think that is what makes the idea of someone "ruining" your life so appealing in the context of this song. You're not necessarily asking for your life to actually fall apart. You're asking for something to happen.
You want the still water to finally have a ripple.
Sue Me — Audrey Hobert
I originally picked Sue Me because of the Off Campus series, but the song itself connects with me for a reason that has less to do with love or romance and more with the simple desire to feel wanted.
There is almost a "screw everything" attitude to it. I don't care what other people call me, what they think of me, or what consequences might come from it. In this moment, I just want someone to want me.
I think that is what makes the song appealing to me.
Sometimes you don't necessarily want some grand, complicated love story. You just want to feel desired. You want someone to choose you, to be interested in you, and to make you feel like you matter to them in that way.
There is something very human about wanting that kind of attention, even if you know it might not lead anywhere deeper.
Maybe part of why I connect with this song is because I don't get much romantic attention in my own life. Sometimes that creates a very simple longing to just be wanted by someone.
Not necessarily because I need a relationship, but because there is something validating about knowing that someone looks at you and thinks, I want you.
For me, that is what this song captures more than anything else.
It isn't necessarily about finding the person you're going to spend the rest of your life with.
It is about wanting, for a moment, to know that someone wants you back.
Earrings — Malcolm Todd
Earrings is another song I discovered through TikTok edits, but what really keeps me coming back to it is the production.
The track is incredibly catchy, especially the quarter-note beat at the beginning that transitions into the groovy drum rhythm. There is something about that progression that immediately grabs my attention and makes the song fun to listen to even outside of the edits.
Of course, my favorite section is:
"Extra, extra, read all about it/Mac is in his feelings and he can't get out of it."
I especially like how that section is used in edits where someone is in the process of realizing and accepting that they have feelings for another person.
There is something almost funny about watching a character slowly realize that they are falling for someone when they have been trying to deny it the entire time.
And I think that is what makes the idea behind the song so appealing to me.
Sometimes we recognize that we have feelings for someone but immediately try to reject them for one reason or another. Maybe the timing is wrong. Maybe we don't think we should feel that way. Maybe admitting it would force us to confront what we actually want.
Eventually, though, the feelings become impossible to ignore.
That is what I think makes the "can't get out of it" line so fitting.
Once you realize you've fallen for someone, you can't always reason your way out of it.
You can try to explain the feelings away. You can tell yourself that it isn't a good idea or that you shouldn't be thinking about this person that way. But eventually there comes a point where you have to admit that the feelings are there.
And sometimes the most amusing part is realizing that you spent so much time trying not to have them in the first place.
Beautiful — Bazzi ft. Camila Cabello
Beautiful is another song I discovered through TikTok edits, and honestly, the entire song is just a vibe to me.
The production has this smooth, dreamy quality that makes it really easy to get lost in. It has the kind of sound that works especially well with edits because it creates an emotional atmosphere without needing to do much.
I think part of what I like is that the song feels romantic without being overly complicated.
There is something very effortless about it.
It has that feeling of simply being completely taken by someone and seeing them as beautiful, almost to the point where everything else fades into the background. Even when I'm not necessarily focusing on the lyrics, the combination of the vocals and production creates this warm, intimate feeling.
It's also one of those songs where I can understand why people use it for edits.
Depending on the scene, it can make a relationship feel softer and more meaningful than it might otherwise appear. A simple glance between two characters, a quiet moment together, or even just two people being happy around each other can suddenly feel much more significant with this song playing over it.
For me, it is less about one specific lyric or interpretation and more about the overall feeling it creates.
It just sounds romantic, warm, and a little dreamy.
And sometimes that's enough to make me want to keep listening.
When Something Changes
These four songs approach connection from very different directions.
Ruin My Life is about wanting someone to disrupt the stillness.
Sue Me is about wanting to feel wanted.
Earrings is about realizing that feelings have developed and becoming unable to escape them.
And Beautiful is about the warm, almost effortless feeling of being completely taken by someone.
None of them necessarily require a complicated love story.
In fact, I think that is part of what connects them.
There is something appealing about the moment before everything becomes complicated. Before you know where something is going. Before you have to figure out what another person wants, what you want, or whether something is actually going to work.
There is just the feeling that something is happening.
A stagnant lake finally has ripples.
Someone finally looks at you and wants you.
You realize you're developing feelings that you can't explain away.
Or you're simply standing next to someone and thinking that, somehow, everything feels a little more romantic than it did before.
Maybe that's why these songs fit together for me.
They all exist somewhere around the beginning of something.
And beginnings are exciting precisely because you don't know what happens next.
