part seven: the songs that feel like a specific moment

Listening to

Some songs make me think of a specific place, person, or moment, even if that moment never actually happened. They can be so vivid that listening to them feels less like hearing a song and more like watching a scene play out in your head. honeybee is one of those songs for me.

honeybee โ€” Olivia Rodrigo

Another song I first came across through a TikTok edit. What made me like this one was the combination of the lyrics and the production. I really like how soft and almost raw the song sounds. There is something about the simplicity of it that makes the emotions in the lyrics feel more exposed, like there is nothing really getting in the way of what the song is trying to convey.

The production doesn't feel overly complicated or like it is trying to make the song bigger than it needs to be. Instead, it gives the lyrics room to exist on their own. That simplicity makes the emotions feel more intimate, almost like you are hearing someone think out loud rather than listening to a carefully constructed performance.

Sometimes when I listen to songs, I imagine them playing in a scene from a TV show, and this is one where I can picture the scene very clearly. I imagine spending the entire day with someone you love and then ending up on a rooftop together, lying under the stars on a crisp summer night. There is this quiet moment where you are just there with them, and you suddenly realize what this person has come to mean to you.

Nothing particularly dramatic has to happen in the scene. In fact, I think that is part of why I like imagining it this way. It is just two people who have spent an entire day together, now sitting somewhere quiet with nowhere else they need to be. The world around them has become almost irrelevant. There is no big declaration or dramatic gesture. There is simply the realization that being with this person feels natural.

The lyrics, especially "And I hope I never see what your face looks like goin', a face, I swear, that I could spend my whole life knowin'" and "In the dark, I'm not scared, I just reach and you're right there," give me that exact feeling. It feels like the realization that this relationship has reached a deeper level, whether you consciously recognize it in that moment or not.

That second lyric especially captures the comfort I associate with the song. In the dark, you reach for someone and already know they will be there. There is something incredibly intimate about that kind of familiarity. It isn't necessarily the excitement of something new anymore. It is the comfort of knowing someone's presence so well that you don't even have to think about it.

This person has become someone whose presence feels comforting and familiar, someone you can imagine knowing for the rest of your life. And I think there is something almost terrifying about realizing that, too. Because once someone becomes that important to you, the possibility of losing them changes.

Before that realization, losing the relationship might have hurt. But after you understand just how deeply this person has become part of your life, the idea of them leaving feels completely different. Suddenly, there is much more at stake. The comfort that makes the relationship so beautiful also creates vulnerability because now there is something you genuinely cannot imagine wanting to lose.

I think that is what makes honeybee feel like such a specific moment to me. It isn't necessarily about the beginning of falling in love or some huge romantic milestone. It is the quieter moment when you realize that somewhere along the way, this person became your person. Maybe you don't even say it out loud. Maybe you don't fully understand what has changed until later. But something has shifted.

And that rooftop scene is probably why the song feels so vivid in my head. I can imagine the stars overhead, the cool summer air, the two of you lying next to each other, and that strange feeling of realizing that you could stay in that moment forever. Nothing needs to happen. You are already exactly where you want to be.

There is something bittersweet about that kind of moment, though. When you realize how much someone means to you, you also realize how much it would hurt if they weren't there anymore. The same closeness that makes the moment comforting is what makes it vulnerable.

Maybe that is what I like most about honeybee. It captures a kind of love that isn't loud. It is found in familiarity, comfort, and the quiet realization that you have started imagining a future with someone without even consciously deciding to.

It feels like the moment before you fully understand what has happened.

You look over at the person beside you, realize how much they mean to you, and suddenly the ordinary moment doesn't feel ordinary anymore.
